Physiotherapy is a clinical speciality that can help to restore/maintain function and movement when someone is affected by illness, injury or disability.

Physiotherapy takes a holistic approach and involves the patient directly in their own care by using self-management strategies and a range of evidence-based interventions.

Some of the main approaches our physiotherapists use include:

  • Education and physical activity advice – physiotherapists can give advice about specific conditions and activity such as posture correction and correct lifting or carrying techniques to help prevent injuries.  They can also provide some advice on how to manage conditions that cannot be ‘cured’ eg arthritis.
  • Tailored exercise advice – exercises may be recommended to improve general health and mobility, and to strengthen specific parts of the body.  These will often be specific to the patient’s problem and tailored to them as an individual.
  • Manual therapy – where the physiotherapist uses their hands to help relieve pain and stiffness, and to encourage better movement of the body or to facilitate a more normal movement
