Ultrasound scanning or Sonography, is a method of obtaining pictures or images of inside the body. It involves sending high frequency sound waves through the body that are reflected back by internal organs. The reflections are then processed by special instruments and powerful computers that subsequently create a visual image of the organs.
Sonographic images are captured in real time and displayed on a monitor for detailed analysis. An ultrasound scan is a painless, usually non-invasive, procedure. There are several methods of performing the examination depending on the part of the body being examined.
Types of ultrasounds performed:
- Abdomen Scans (liver, gallbladder & bile ducts, kidneys, pancreas, spleen and aorta)
- Urinary Tract Scans (kidney and renal system)
- Gynaecological (pelvis) Scans
- Vascular (DVT) Scans
- Musculoskeletal (soft tissue, tendons, muscles, ligaments) Scans
- Small Parts (salivary glands, scrotum) Scans
